Review by Margaret Crawford
I would like warmly to recommend that you get hold of a copy of the new album, ‘Romantic Bonbons’, recorded by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Flute, Janet Webb, and distinguished Pianist, Jocelyn Fazzone.
Perhaps the title ‘Romantic Bonbons’ suggests a degree of superficiality in the choice of items. I feel a certain sentimental nostalgia in listening to a number of these tracks, however there is nothing insignificant about them, and any element of superficiality is neither evident in the music nor in its performance. Certainly some of the items are sheer fun to listen to, such as the ‘Scherzo Capriccio’ by Sabathil, or the ‘Allegro ritmico’ by Mathias, but they are such worthwhile fun! Then there are others that are truly good for the soul such as the ‘Premiere Romance’ by Leroux and especially the ‘Romance’ by Edward German with its simplicity, serenity and generous warmth. Not all of the pieces are well known, but they are altogether worthy of inclusion. Five of the ten I have never heard before and am delighted to be introduced to them.
Along with the splendidly accomplished playing on this recording there is a delicacy and easy elegance which is rarely heard these days – a lack of exaggeration which opens the door to a genuine sensitivity of expression and a wide range of subtle colours and varied emotions. How often the musician stands in the way of the composer rather than focusing on the communication of the composer’s ideas! Not in this case. Neither of these two fine players presents any obstacle to the ideas that shine through.
With its fantastic teamwork – ensemble, dynamics and excellent intonation – this is a highly entertaining, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable recording!
